Firefox's Firebug

Examining CSS

Examining CSS

You can examine CSS with the Inspect Element RH menu option in Safari but the view is rather limited. You get to see an aggregation of the stylesheets that have been applied which is fine but not as clear as it could be.

The Firebug Firefox extension does the same and more. You'll see the same CSS info but you can:

  • see the margins and padding highlighted
  • move up/down the HTML hierarchy and see what applies now
  • expand/contract the HTML
  • edit the CSS live

Editing the CSS live isn't that much of a great thing as

  1. after a while even you, a Web-numpty, will get a feel for margins and padding
  2. ultimately, you have to edit the right stylesheet which can be considerably less obvious
