How to re-create a Plone site from scratch
Manage Portlets
If not at the main site click Home.
There should be a Manage Portlets button -- normally on the right hand side under the Calendar portlet but maybe underneath the main body. Click it.
Deselect portlets.
Note that there won't be a navigation portlet (on the left) if there are no other top-level folders than Home (ie. you've disabled the auto-generate option in Site Setup; Navigation.)
